Viejas creaciones/ Old Creations

Estas son fotografías de una serie de trabajos que me fueron encargados por mi amigo Bulmaro Álvarez. Hace unos años, Bulmaro me había encargado la creación de un alebrije, la indicación que me dio era que quería que la pieza tendiera a ser más un insecto. El “alebrije mantiz” tuvo un largo proceso de creación, y fue reelaborado tres veces antes de que yo quedara satisfecho con el resultado final.

La pieza estuvo inspirada en una vieja ilustración que yo hiciera hace años de un dragón-insecto. En aquellos años yo tenía la intención de hacer un bestiario de dragones, mi amigo Francisco Sánamo y yo hicimos unas cuantas ilustraciones al respecto, pero como algunos de nuestros proyectos quedaron en el escritorio. Sin embargo, cuando Bulmaro me solicitó el alebrije, recordé aquella imagen y pensé que sería lo que el buscaba, además de que las formas del dragón eran muy básicas y fáciles de trasladar a un objeto de tres dimensiones, de modo que me puse a trabajar en la pieza.

El resultado fue satisfactorio para ambos, aunque debo decir que la gama de colores de la pieza fue la tercera que se intentó, ya que la primera había sido tonalidades verdes y azules, la segunda en tonos azules y morados y finalmente nos decidimos por colores más cálidos y alegres.

Mi trabajo le gustó tanto a Bulmaro que decidió encargarme una serie de piezas para obsequiar a sus amistades, fue así como inicié la serie de los caballitos de mar, el ave fénix y el gato alado, que fueron elaborados también en base a figuras geométricas básicas, como lo fuera el alebrije-mantiz.

El gato fue inspirado en alguna imagen de la diosa gata Bastet, el cuerpo del gato está muy estilizado a través de las líneas curvas y delgadas que forman las extremidades y el cuello, y busqué romper un tanto el ritmo al usar ángulos agudos para las alas. El fénix es la síntesis de una pieza que siempre busqué hacer un tamaño más grande, aunque inicialmente imaginé la cola sería como como el de un pavorreal, al final opté que fuera tan sencillo como la cola de un ratón. Los caballitos de mar también son el resultado de una pieza que había imaginado con anterioridad, aunque las extremidades delanteras son las que tienen mayor semejanza con los caballos terrestres.

Siempre pensé en hacer una segunda versión de estas piezas aunque más detalladas, sobre todo la del fénix y los caballos de mar, piezas en las que tengo algo más de práctica. La idea es que tengan un aspecto mucho más real y orgánico, de modo que uno pueda pensar que criaturas semejante podrían existir porque se las estoy presentando de un modo tan natural como me las puedo imaginar.

Los gatos son otro tema que quisiera desarrollar, pero inspirado en las imágenes de algunos de los gatos que nos presentara en algunos de sus cuadros la artista surrealista Remedios Varo (en cuyos mundos me siento tan cómodo). Además tengo la idea desde hace años de hacer un gato-lechuza.

These are pics of a series of works that were asked me by my friend Bulmaro Álvarez. A few years ago, Bulmaro had asked me the creation of an alebrije, the indication that gave to me was that he wanted that the piece was tending to be more an insect. “ Alebrije mantiz ” had a long process of creation, and it was re-prepared three times before I was remaining satisfied with the final work.

The piece was inspired in an old illustration that I was doing years ago of a dragon-insect. In those years I had the intention of doing a bestiary of dragons, my friend Francisco Sámanoand I did a few illustrations on this matter, but as some of our projects they stayed just in the table. Nevertheless, when Bulmaro requested me the alebrije, I remembered that image and thought that it would be what the buscaba, in addition to which the forms of the dragon were very basic and easy to move to an object of three dimensions, so that I started being employed at the piece. The result was satisfactory for bothof us, although I must say that the scale of colors of the piece was the third that was tried, since the first one had been green and blue tonalities, the second in blue and purple tones and finally we decide on more warm and happy colors.

 The cat was inspired in some image of the goddess cat Bastet, the body of the cat is much stylized across the curved and thin lines that form the extremities and the neck, and I thought about how to break somewhat the rhythm on having used sharp angles for the wings. The phoenix is the synthesis of a piece that I always thought about how to do a bigger size, although initially I imagined the tail it would be like like that of a pavorreal, in the end I chose that it was so simple as the tail of a mouse. The seahorses also are the result of a piece that he had imagined in advance, although the front extremities are those that have major resemblance with the terrestrial horses.

My work liked so much to Bulmaro who decided to entrust me a series of pieces to offer to his friends, it was as well as I initiated the series of the seahorses, the Phoenix bird and the winged cat, which were prepared also based on geometric basic figures, as the alebrije-mantiz.

I always thought of doing the second version of these pieces although more detailed, especially that of the phoenix and the horses of sea, pieces in which I have slightly more of practice. The idea is that they have a much more real and organic aspect, so that one could think that creatures similar might exist because I am presenting them to him in a way as natural as can imagine them.

The cats are another topic that it wanted to develop, but inspired by the images of some of the cats that the surrealistic artist was presenting to us in some of his pictures Remedies Varo (in whose worlds I feel so comfortable). Also I have the idea for years of doing a cat-owl.
