Caballo de mar y Estrella de Oriente/ Seahorse and Star of the East

Hace unos días, dos amigos me encargaron un par de piezas: una máscara y un caballo de mar.

Se me indicó que la máscara tenía que ser similar a las del carnaval de Venecia, así qué la pieza tendría como tema central una máscara neutra con decoraciones que la hicieran única.
Afortunadamente yo contaba con una máscara que había comenzado, precisamente, en un curso sobre máscaras venecianas y que tenía la forma de una estrella. El tema central de la máscara era mi propio rostro, trabajado de manera específica para refinar los rasgos de la nariz y la boca. Y en lugar de agregar los característicos cuernos del gorro de arlequín o bufón (con cascabeles incluidos) que se ve en las máscaras venecianas, decidí que esas extensiones fueran los destellos de la estrella. La idea que tuve para decorarla fue la de utilizar colores cálidos para los destellos dejando que el centro fuera el del color más claro, la parte más luminosa. El blanco central es el corazón de la estrella, pero para resaltar los rasgos del rostro decidí inspirarme en elementos de las máscaras del teatro kabuki japonés, de manera que el color más oscuro de las puntas lo utilicé en el centro mismo del rostro para resaltar los rasgos y darle cierto equilibrio.

El caballo de mar es un tema que ya he trabajado con anterioridad, así que he ido simplificando cada vez más su elaboración basándome en cuerpos geométricos sencillos para dar volumen al cuerpo y agregando nuevos detalles como son las patas y las aletas. Las primeras versiones del caballo de mar no tenía patas, pero ese detalle lo agregué dándole un aspecto más 'alebrijado' y fantástico a la pieza. La elección de los colores tuvo que ver con la solicitud de agregar el amarillo y el café, lo que me hizo pensar nuevamente en colores cálidos para la misma.

A few days ago, two friends entrusted me a pair of pieces: a mask and a seahorse. It was indicated me that the mask had to be similar to those of the carnival of Venice, so the piece would take a neutral mask as a central topic with decorations that were making her unique. Fortunately I was provided with a mask that had begun, precisely, in a course on Venetian masks and that had the form of a star. The central topic of the mask was my own face worked in a specific way to refine the features of the nose and the mouth. And instead of adding the characteristic horns of the cap of harlequin or buffoon (with included bells) that it is seen in the Venetian masks, I decided that these extensions were the twinkles of the star. The idea that I had to decorate it was that of using warm colors for the twinkles leaving that the center was that of the clearest color, the most luminous part. The central color white  is the heart of the star, but to highlight the features of the face I decided to be inspired by elements of the masks of the kabuki Japanese theater, so that I used the darkest color of the tops in the center itself of the face to highlight the features and to give him certain balance.

The horse of sea is a topic that I have already worked in advance, so I have been simplifying increasingly his making basing on geometric simple bodies to give volume to the body and adding new details like they are the paws and the fins. The first versions of the seahorse it had no paws, but I added this detail giving him an aspect more 'alebrijado' and fantasticly to the piece. The election of the colors had to see with the request of adding the yellow and the brown, which  made me think again about warm colors for the same one.
